{"id":335,"date":"2024-01-25T19:33:08","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T18:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/invar.nl\/?page_id=335"},"modified":"2024-01-25T21:00:26","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T20:00:26","slug":"toothpaste-tablets","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/invar.nl\/?page_id=335","title":{"rendered":"Toothpaste tablets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(short description of the project + goals)<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__list has-dates wp-block-latest-posts\"><li><a class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__post-title\" href=\"https:\/\/invar.nl\/?p=464\">Toothpaste tablets &#8211; order ingredients for first formulation?<\/a><time datetime=\"2024-01-27T12:27:13+01:00\" class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__post-date\">27 January 2024<\/time><div class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__post-full-content\"><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I&#8217;ve found out the following things:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Fluoride is hard to get in small quantities and\/or as a consumer<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41415-020-1540-8\">type of fluoride matters<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Soluble calcium in the formulation reacts with fluoride to give insoluble calcium fluoride, making it less effective unless you don&#8217;t rinse and drink anything for several hours after<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>If I want the best fluoride action, I should get soluble sodium fluoride, and I should not use calcium compounds as the abrasive. This is why the toothpaste tablets I buy from the store have cellulose and silicate instead of calcium carbonate, I think. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I could spend \u20ac20 to get 100 grams of sodium fluoride which would last me a lifetime, but I&#8217;d prefer to not have so much of a toxic compound in a drawer so I&#8217;m continuing to look for smaller quantities.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Cellulose (microcrystalline cellulose, MCC, E460): this is also less abrasive than most other most other toothpaste binders. I can&#8217;t find a good source for buying it yet.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Sources for what ingredients to use:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7245492\/\"> this study<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/newteethbytom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8.a.-Toothpaste-Abrasiveness-Comparisons.pdf\">this site<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Mild abrasives<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Calcium carbonate &#8211; makes fluoride less effective (Mohs 3.0)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Sodium bicarbonate &#8211; more of a filler, not abrasive enough on its own (Mohs 2.5)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Magnesium carbonate &#8211; also makes fluoride less effective, but magnesium fluoride is slightly more soluble (Mohs 4.0-4.5)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Dehydrated silica gels &#8211; too hard\/abrasive (Mohs 7 vs enamel&#8217;s 5)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Silicates &#8211; too hard\/abrasive<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Hydrated aluminium oxides &#8211; I don&#8217;t want aluminium, also way too hard (Mohs 9)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Phosphate salts<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD, Mohs 3.5) &#8211; fluoride interaction? It is compatible with monofluorophosphate (MFP). Can find as animal feed and bulking supplement, but this is typically the much harder anhydrous form (DCPA), so I would need to hydrate it. That&#8217;s ok, I need to add water to make a slurry anyway. Calculate how much DCPA is needed, calculate how much water is needed to hydrate 100%, calculate how much extra water is needed for formulation, soak overnight, filter and dry back to required weight. May not have same properties as commercial DCPD, which I was able to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laboratoriumdiscounter.nl\/nl\/calciumwaterstoffosfaat-99-ph-euruspe-341ii.html?channable=05519369640032333839393732383739\">here<\/a> (food grade)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>insoluble sodium metaphosphate (IMP)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><s>sodium hexametaphosphate<\/s>. <em>Edit: sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is not used as abrasive, but as a soluble active ingredient that helps prevent staining and tartar &#8211; best used around <a href=\"https:\/\/karger.com\/cre\/article\/57\/3\/265\/863115\/Interaction-between-Hexametaphosphate-Other-Active\">0.25%<\/a> because then it also prevents tooth erosion, with possible negative effects.<\/em><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list --><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Natural materials: <a href=\"https:\/\/vedrus.si\/zahnpasten\/kedra-zobna-pasta-z-oljno-pogaco-in-lupinami-cedrinih-oreskov-sl\/?sl=en\">cedar nut shell <\/a>powder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berfini.eu\/eng\/shop\/toothpastes\/eyup-sabri-tuncer-1923-natural-walnut\/\">walnut shell<\/a> powder, olive stone powder, almond shell powder, pistachio shell powder, pear stone powder, etc. all have a Mohs hardness around 3.5 &#8211; ideal hardness for a mild tooth abrasive. However, may be hard to find in the right size (&lt;100\u00b5m, possibly smaller needed), may contain pigments that stain, may require rinsing after brushing<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Thickening agents<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Mineral colloids, e.g. clay<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Seaweed colloids e.g. carrageenan<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Natural gums<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Cellulose gum; Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC)?<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Xanthan gum<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list --><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Synthetic cellulose<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)?<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list --><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Other stuff:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Xylitol &#8211; active ingredient, sweetener. 25% is ideal<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Surfactant: SDS, SLS (anionic, <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcoralhealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12903-022-02089-2\">don&#8217;t want<\/a>), sodium cocoyl glutamate (anionic), cocamidopropyl betaine (amphoteric), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/skindeep\/browse\/ingredients\/703445LAURYL_GLUCOSIDE\/?category=toothpaste\">lauryl glucoside<\/a> (nonionic), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/skindeep\/products\/1046959-Green_Beaver_Sensitive_Toothpaste_Fresh_Mint\/\">coco glucoside<\/a> (nonionic). Nonionic is mildest on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-92505-4\"> salivary pellicles<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Fluoride: I want sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP)<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Zinc (zinc chloride 47.98%, zinc citrate 22.77%, zinc acetate 35.64%, zinc gluconate 13.29%): inhibits plaque formation, prevents halitosis. Allowed up to 1%, although there was a <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ec.europa.eu\/system\/files\/2021-08\/sccs_o_207_0.pdf\">proposal<\/a> to lower this to 0.1% for toothpaste but in this study 1% was deemed to be perfectly safe. I&#8217;m finding it difficult to find any food safe soluble zinc powder as a consumer though. Perhaps zinc oxide (80.35%, Mohs 4.5) works ok? Colgate uses it. However, not very soluble.<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate): antimicrobial, flavour, helps <a href=\"https:\/\/theholisticbackpacker.com\/nelsons-naturals-toothpaste-tablets-review\/\">hold the tablets together<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Citric acid: stimulates saliva production, pH balancing<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I&#8217;ve decided that calcium carbonate base would still be the easiest, even if it makes the fluoride less effective. Many toothpaste products still combine these two.<br><br>Total formulation:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>50% calcium carbonate &#8211; 500 g makes 2.0 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.nl\/Sala-Calciumcarbonaat-Smeerkrijt-170-CaCO3\/dp\/B09BQLJCGQ\/ref=sr_1_1?qid=1706398049&amp;refinements=p_4%3ASALA&amp;s=health&amp;sr=1-1\">\u20ac6.88<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>20% sodium bicarbonate &#8211; 454 g makes 2.3 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jumbo.com\/producten\/arm-hammer-pure-baksoda-454g-580764DS\">\u20ac1.70<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>25% xylitol &#8211; 300 g makes 1.2 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollandandbarrett.nl\/shop\/product\/holland-barrett-xylitol-300g-6100002448\">\u20ac4.99<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>2% coco glucoside &#8211; 250 mL makes 12 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jojoli.nl\/kokosglucoside.html\">\u20ac4.75<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>1.5% coco betaine &#8211; 250 mL makes 16 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jojoli.nl\/kokosbetaine.html\">\u20ac4.45<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>1.2% zinc oxide &#8211; 100 g makes 8.3 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jojoli.nl\/zinkoxide.html\">\u20ac4.55<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>0.3% sodium fluoride &#8211; 100 g makes 33 kg for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labshop.nl\/natriumfluoride\/\">\u20ac21.12<\/a><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>up to 0.25% essential oils to taste<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>plus water, <a href=\"https:\/\/thethingswellmake.com\/diy-toothpaste-tablets-recipe\/\">approx. 20%<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>With each tablet being about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bol.com\/nl\/nl\/p\/tandpasta-tabletten-denttabs-met-fluoride-300-stuks-natuurlijk-vegan-duurzaam-zero-waste-plasticvrij\/9200000107722702\/\">0.3<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.litesmith.com\/toothpaste-tablets\/\">0.5 g<\/a>, this set of ingredients would make me about 3000 tablets for \u20ac48.44 (\u20ac0.016 each), compared to about \u20ac0.042 each at the store. Including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.nl\/dp\/B0C5GPM8JJ\">\u20ac5.99<\/a> silicone mould the break even point for 1 person is about 2 years worth of toothpaste tablets (~1500). <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The surfactants I only need very little of, and I&#8217;m already buying them for other products, so I guess the total cost for this project is a little lower. The zinc oxide and sodium fluoride I will have way too much of, but the calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and xylitol are easy to get more of so if I really wanted to I could make 20,000 tablets for around \u20ac100 (\u20ac0.005 each) which would last me about 27 years. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/div><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__post-title\" href=\"https:\/\/invar.nl\/?p=328\">Toothpaste tablet mould &#038; shampoo bar mould<\/a><time datetime=\"2024-01-25T18:29:26+01:00\" class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__post-date\">25 January 2024<\/time><div class=\"wp-block-latest-posts__post-full-content\"><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I ordered some items that I hope to be able to use as moulds.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The first is a pet treat baking mould that I hope to use for making toothpaste tablets. It&#8217;s made out of food-grade silicone and has 468 &#8220;hemispheres&#8221; of 12mm diameter. They&#8217;re not entirely pill-shaped so I hope it works! Again I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;ll work, but apparently some people have had <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fNPssJdqfJc?si=L2JDn6PM7h0s8YFx&amp;t=227\">success<\/a> with them. The shampoo bars I buy from the store are 6cm diameter, 3cm thickness, 65g, but I wouldn&#8217;t mind them to be a bit bigger. Recipe: Xylitol, Microchrystalline Cellulose BP, Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Mint Powder, Menthol, Sodium Fluoride.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/thethingswellmake.com\/diy-toothpaste-tablets-recipe\/\">this<\/a> recipe?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Maybe use <a href=\"https:\/\/celluloseether.com\/hydroxyethyl-cellulose-in-cosmetics\/\">hydroxyethylcellulose<\/a>? About <a href=\"https:\/\/celluloseether.com\/applications-cmc-hec-daily-chemical-products\/\">1%<\/a>? The brand I&#8217;m currently using containts microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and some brands contain up to <a href=\"https:\/\/denttabs.com\/pages\/ingredients\">70%<\/a> MCC.
