The general one should use aggressive surfactants, the wool one must obviously be mild. I haven&#8217;t made any detergent before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m starting off my research <a href=\"https:\/\/thethingswellmake.com\/diy-liquid-laundry-detergent-recipe-no-soap\/\">here<\/a> at thethingswe&#8217;llmake, where they use liquid SLS, coco betaine, and decyl glucoside as surfactants, salt as a thickener, and preservatives. This looks like a great recipe for cotton and synthetics, but the SLS is too harsh for wool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wool is in some ways similar to human hair, and on hiking trips I&#8217;ve used my (CG) shampoo bar for washing my wool clothes. I think if ingredients are not CG, they are probably not good in a wool wash detergent too. Handwashing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soapmakingforum.com\/threads\/wool-wash-and-surfactants.78227\/post-813783\">mild shampoo<\/a> seems to be considered safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wool wash detergents typically contain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surfactants such as SCS, lauryl glucoside, and cocamidopropyl betaine &#8211; similar to some shampoos. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emollients like lanolin (wool fat). Typically 0-<a href=\"https:\/\/danishwool.com\/products\/kookaburra-wool-wash\">1%<\/a>, or 5-7.5% in lanolin replenishing formulations. However lanolin is probably <a href=\"https:\/\/heritageparklaundry.com\/blogs\/the-laundry-lowdown\/the-truth-about-lanolin-in-wool-detergent\">not<\/a> what I want, it&#8217;ll prevent moisture wicking of the garments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preservatives such as potassium sorbate or <a href=\"https:\/\/humdakin.com\/products\/sensitive-wool-and-cashmere-detergent-cleaning?variant=39706386169969\">2-phenoxyethanol<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pH adjusters such as citric acid &#8211; pH should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soapmakingforum.com\/threads\/wool-wash-and-surfactants.78227\/\">neutral<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/humdakin.com\/products\/sensitive-wool-and-cashmere-detergent-cleaning?variant=39706386169969\">acidic<\/a> (pH&lt;4 can help preserve)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I guess I could just adjust the thethingswe&#8217;llmake formulation to use a milder anionic surfactant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5% SCI &#8211; poorly soluble so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humblebeeandme.com\/project\/sodium-cocoyl-isethionate\/\">mix<\/a> with coco betaine first (melt the surfactant phase?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5% Coco betaine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3% Coco glucoside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2% table salt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pH adjustment to <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0040517508099390\">pH 5-7<\/a> is ideal for wool, <a href=\"https:\/\/thethingswellmake.com\/beginners-guide-to-natural-preservatives\/\">pH &lt;5.5<\/a> is ideal for Geoguard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humblebeeandme.com\/project\/sodium-cocoyl-isethionate\/\">pH >6.0<\/a> is best for SCI because otherwise it will start to hydrolyse. Maybe another surfactant or preservative? Aim for pH 5.5-6.0 otherwise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1% Geoguard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I want to make my own soap-free laundry detergents; one for wool wash and one for general laundry.
